On behalf of the Terrell County Chamber of Commerce, welcome to our community! Terrell County has a lot to offer to you! Our county is proud of its southern hospitality. We have a lot of history and are looking forward to all of the progress that is constantly approaching us!
Bronwood, Dawson, Parrott, and Sasser are the four cities that comprise Terrell County. Dawson is the county seat and the largest populated city within our county. Formed in 1856 from portions of Randolph and Lee counties, Terrell County was named for eminent Georgia physician and statesman Dr. William Terrell of Sparta
Terrell County’s local economy has a strong agro-business base. Peanuts are Georgia’s number one cash crop and Terrell County is located in the heart of the peanut belt. In fact, Dawson is the headquarters for the National Peanut Research Laboratory and is happy to have Golden Peanut Company as a part of our county. Several firms such as Massey Wholesale, Dawson Manufacturing, and Tyson Foods flourish in the local industrial park. In addition, Dawson Municipal Airport has a lot to offer to those interested in aviation. Also, Mark’s Melon Patch is known for their roadside stand in Sasser.
Terrell County residents can enroll their children in the local public school system or in a local private school. The public school system consists of three schools: Lillie Cooper Primary, Carver Elementary and the brand new Terrell Middle High School. Terrell Academy is a local private school, which serves grades K-12.
Opportunities for adults to improve their academic knowledge and skills are also available in Terrell County. The community, in conjunction with Albany Technical College, created a certified literate community program for its residents. The program assists adults with learning to read as well as obtaining a GED.
Terrell County has been designated as a Better Hometown Community. Our Better Hometown Task Force works tirelessly to help make Downtown Dawson a better place. There has been a beautification project in the past. Also, the BHTF is currently renovating the old Main Street Theatre. The group writes, acts, and directs local plays during the fall and the spring.
The Terrell County Historic Preservation Society is quite active in the heart of the Historic District in Dawson. Two sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places: the Terrell County Courthouse, which is currently under renovation, and the Garden Club House. The courthouse was constructed in 1892 and renovated for the first time in 1936. Another interesting building in the county is the Chickasawhatchee Primitive Baptist Church, built in 1858 and is today the oldest church still standing on its original site in Terrell County. Along Main Street in Dawson, one can find many historic murals painted along many of the buildings.
Terrell County also offers many recreational activities for its residents including softball, basketball, football, and tennis. The Dawson Country Club offers a challenging 9-hole golf course. A brand new recreational facility is being built 2.3 miles of Dawson and will host baseball/softball fields, a walking track, and a soccer/football field. There is also a very active 4-H program that provides opportunities for animal husbandry and agriculture. Activities are also available for avid gamesmen. Terrell is located in the heart of the finest quail hunting in the country. Huntsmen can pursue game at several preserves and plantations. Other outdoor activities include boating, camping, and fishing.
Terrell County also offers 10 different youth development programs ranging from the Boys and Girls Club of Terrell County to the Youth Elements of Success. The county also has 12 other civic and various organizations that provide services for the citizens of the community. The county is also a host to over 50 churches in the community. Terrell County also hosts an annual Tour of Homes. Terrell County is a great place to work and live! Come… Sit…Stay!
